About Cripplegate Foundation and Islington Giving

Established over 500 years ago, Cripplegate Foundation has become a pioneering, place-based grantmaking foundation with a reputation for innovation and making a difference. We make grants of over £2 million a year and we have become a major influencer in the grant-giving sector, achieving significant progress, such as:

Raising over £12 million since 2010.

Partnering with Islington Council to promote community development and support residents

Developing innovative and participatory grant programmes

Pushing forward with ambitious Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) goals

It’s an exciting (and challenging) time to join us!

Deadline: 10am on 23 January, 2026

Salary: £46,000 – £56,000, with a workplace pension scheme and 30 days leave
Based: Hybrid – currently at least one day a week (Thursdays) in the SE11-based office
Contract: permanent

Our enduring focus is to strengthen the voluntary sector and transform the funding system, so that charities can do their best work.

About IVAR

At IVAR, we’re more than researchers – we’re sense-makers and bridge-builders. We turn real-world challenges in the voluntary sector into clear, practical insights that inspire change and action.

For 25 years, we’ve worked shoulder-to-shoulder with charities, funders and community organisations: listening, learning and tackling tough problems together. Our work is curious, grounded, human and hopeful.

Our 2025–2030 strategy includes a clear commitment to transforming the funding system and the Open and Trusting programme will be the key to achieving that commitment.

Born in 2021, Open and Trusting is directly inspired by what matters most to charities. Today, 170 funders have signed up to the eight commitments – actively working to be clear, flexible, proportionate, and purposeful in their grant-making. We know this makes a huge difference to charities and the communities they support.

About the role and person

Open and Trusting has come a long way, but there’s a lot more it can achieve – which is why we are looking for a dedicated leader for the programme. The success of the role will depend on an understanding and belief in the work of charities and funders, and the power of transforming funding practices.

As Head of Programme and Engagement, you’ll bring energy, structure and connective thinking to the work. You will strengthen the community, support learning and ensure that the programme runs with momentum and purpose.

This role is collaborative and outward-facing and combines project management, engagement, community-building and fundraising. The person will need first-rate listening, diplomacy, influencing and relationship-building skills and will be a proven manager, with a track record of developing management infrastructures that underpin the success of initiatives involving multiple strands and big ideas.

If you feel you fit the role and are motivated by our work then we’d love to hear from you. Salary: £40,000–£46,000, plus a 6% pension contribution
Contract: Permanent
Hours: Full-time (35 hours/five days per week, two of which are office-based)
Location: Hybrid, central London (Bloomsbury) office

Are you our new Grants Manager?

Are you committed to defending human rights and human dignity, and interested in issues affecting marginalised and excluded people?

Are you passionate about social justice and believe in the agency of people to create change?

Do you have a personal and/or professional connection to one or more of our priority areas, and experience or understanding of grant making?

Are you emotionally intelligent and able to form and develop strong working relationships with a range of individuals and groups?

If so, then you might be the right person to join the AB Charitable Trust at this exciting time.

Our priorities and approach

The human rights framework

The criminal legal system

Migrants, refugees and people seeking asylum

Access to justice

The A B Charitable Trust exists to promote human dignity and defend the human rights of the most marginalised and excluded people. Our approach is founded on liberal principles of universalism and human rights. We believe in justice, not charity. For us, this means supporting work that promotes rights and does not diminish dignity. It also means supporting efforts to change the systems that shape the lives of marginalised and excluded people in pernicious ways. We have a particular interest in work that uses the law to address inequities and injustices.

Our journey

The Trust was founded 35 years ago to promote and defend human dignity. Since then, we have given over £47m to organisations, and this year we will spend some £10m. We have significantly increased our grantmaking over recent years and intend to continue on a trajectory of growth. This role will join us as we look to the longer term future and begin to develop a new strategy that will build on all that is being achieved through our current strategy, which ends in 2027.

We are excited by the future and are fortunate to have a modest but growing budget which is expected to reach £15m by 2027. But we are realistic about the challenges involved. The areas we work in are highly politicised and the need is ever increasing, which is why it is important that we attract candidates who are able to help us navigate these waters and who can contribute to maximising our impact at this critical moment.

About the role and you

The key purpose of this role is to:

Effectively manage a portfolio or grants across all of our priority areas

Work closely with the team, grant holders and Board members, developing strong and supportive working relationships

Contribute to the development of our new strategy and be committed to our values and share our aspirations around best grantmaking practice

The new Grants Manager will need to be genuinely interested in grantmaking in our priority areas and will have the curiosity to learn and develop new areas of knowledge and expertise. You will need to be able to demonstrate a passion for the work of small, grassroots organisations, have emotional intelligence and strong communications skills, and also be genuinely excited about joining our team.

This could be the right opportunity for a range of potential candidates. We value the knowledge and expertise gained through lived experience of social injustice alongside sector experience. We’re not looking for a seasoned grant maker but you will need to bring commitment to our work and vision, demonstrate experience of seeking to bring about change on tough issues, and have experience of one or more of our priority areas.

If you would like to have an informal discussion about the role then please contact Allyson Davies, who is advising on this appointment.

We value, welcome and respect all the differences that make us who we are, including: age, cultural background, disability and mental health, ethnicity and race, sex, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, and social background.

Hours: Full-time

Location: Hybrid working from offices in Stratford (London), or fully remote considered

Are you our first Deputy Director?

Are you passionate about the voices of people with lived experience in campaigns and communications around the asylum and immigration system?

Are you a diplomat and leader, able to influence and collaborate with a network and partners?

Do you enjoy being part of a small, dynamic team working with movement leaders, turning your hand to different challenges?

Can you further build a campaign coalition to equip it to win deep change in the way the UK treats refugees?

About us

The Asylum Reform Initiative (ARI) is an alliance of nine leading national organisations collaborating to secure deep change towards a fair, compassionate and well-managed UK approach to refugees. Central to its strategy has been incubating, launching and backing the broader, public-facing Together With Refugees campaign coalition, now with over 600 national and local member groups from across the refugee sector and beyond. The ARI team provides a dynamic hub that supports Together With Refugees, coordinating the development and delivery of the coalition’s campaign strategy.

About the role

This is a new role. Working closely with the rest of the ARI team, One Strong Voice, and the newly formed Together With Refugees Steering Group, it will play a key part in shaping and delivering the ambitious next phase of the Together With Refugees strategy. The Deputy Director will lead on movement building, strengthening the coalition, and developing the reach, activation levels and effectiveness of the coalition’s grassroots campaign organising to secure changes in policy and practice. At the heart of this is the engagement and leadership of activists with lived experience as refugees, and of member groups that are led by and for refugees – so advancing the goal of a transition to leadership by people with lived experience across the coalition. Key to this work will be building the capacity, effectiveness and impact of the One Strong Voice network to support lived experience campaigners, organisations and leaders at all levels. The Deputy Director will also contribute to wider leadership of the team’s work including fundraising, support for – and accountability to – coalition leadership structures, and effective delivery of the team’s work programme.

About you

The Deputy Director will be a natural collaborator and relationship builder, able to work with diplomacy to drive forward our ambitious strategic aims. You will need ambition, energy and an ability to work at both strategic and more detailed levels. This could be the right opportunity for a range of potential candidates. You could be someone who has led and managed in other issues-based settings, in the asylum and refugee sector, or more broadly. Whatever your background, if you think you have the skills and experience to contribute to our team and take Together With Refugees forward then we’d like to hear from you.

Our commitment to and our strategic aims means that, we warmly invite and encourage applications from people with lived experience of the asylum system, or of forced migration more generally.

How to apply

About the Legal Education Foundation

“Why does it matter that people can understand and use the law?”

This question lies at our core. By asking it, the role of the law as a tool for social justice has become the common thread in our development. We are now one of the largest social justice funders in the UK, and one of the only ones to focus on the specific role and potential of the law. We do this through the strategic development and delivery of a number of programmes and initiatives.

We distribute around £6m a year through our grants, which cover areas of law including human rights, employment, housing, discrimination, children’s rights, community care, education, immigration, asylum and public and administrative law. We also fund particular issues and communities, such as racial justice, gender justice including violence against women and girls, disability justice, tenants, workers, migrants, refugees and children.

The Justice First Fellowship

In 2014 we established the Justice First Fellowship (JFF), our flagship scheme to support the next generation of social justice lawyers. More than 160 Fellowships have been awarded across all four nations in the UK, over ten cohorts. The Foundation has invested around £10.6 million into the scheme with additional contributions from other funders totalling £4.7 million.

The Fellowships have supported the new lawyers to use their skills and networks to bring about social change. Over 90% of JFF graduates remain in legal roles using law for public benefit and we are committed to continuing to support our alumni over the long term. So, it is an active and engaged group with a growing collective impact and voice for social justice.

About the role

This is a new role within the Foundation, and the post-holder will play a key part in ensuring the successful delivery of this flagship scheme. As part of a small and collaborative team, the JFF Officer role is varied and will include overseeing the coordination of events and training, acting as a key point of contact for Fellows as well as administration, communication and relationship management. The candidate will join us at an exciting time as we explore opportunities to help further develop the support provided to our Fellows.

If you have relevant experience and skills, are passionate about social justice and the not-for-profit sector, and thrive on building relationships, then this could be a great opportunity for you. On a practical note there will be some UK travel and you’ll need a demonstrable ability to juggle multiple projects. There’s lots more information in the pack so please find out more if you are interested, and if you feel that you could be right for the role then we’d love to hear from you.

Power, Culture and Inclusion

As an organisation we are committed to shifting power in the systems that we are part of. Through a process of learning about anti-oppression, developing our values and behaviours, we want to build the best workplace.

Across all our recruitment we are working towards greater equity, diversity and inclusion and take this journey extremely seriously. Part of this journey is building a team that is diverse and representative, so whilst you will need the skills and experience described, we really want to hear from candidates from a wide range of backgrounds. We particularly encourage people with lived experience of social welfare legal issues and where they intersect with structural racism and other forms of discrimination. However, there is no expectation for candidates to disclose details of personal experiences at any stage during this recruitment or during their work at the LEF.

We are happy to make adjustments to the application and interview process, please contact Belinda Berry (belinda.berry@thelef.org or 02030055694).

Closing date: 20 January, 2025

Salary: £45,000 – £55,000 (pro rata) plus 8% pension and generous annual leave

Hours: Four days a week, Tuesday–Friday.

Location: Primarily based at Sam’s North London residence or a co-working space in Central London, with some time spent near Hay-On-Wye.

Are you the Strategy and Executive Facilitator to work with Sam?

Do you thrive in a collaborative, open, creative and highly adaptive environment where all forms of intelligence and perspective are valued?

Do you have an aptitude and ability to effectively support and collaborate with neurodivergent leadership and with someone whose preferred style of working is strongly verbal?

Can you be a conduit for creative ideas and visions and enable communications, strategy and organisation, and can you see what steps and actions need to be taken to support translating them into reality?

Our priorities and approach

The Roddick Foundation was established by Gordon and Anita Roddick, founders of The Body Shop. We are entrepreneurial and activist, driving innovative programmes and focusing on people and organisations that take unconventional approaches to advancing justice and empowering communities. We do this through two areas of work; grant making and initiating and incubating system-change projects. Historically some of these include initiating and incubating the Big Issue and 38 Degrees.

Current projects include indigenous rights in Canada and Brazil, a farming cluster project in Wales and creating new ways of trading with indigenous food growers.

The projects are led by Sam Roddick who is a creative entrepreneur and who brings her creative and intuitive abilities to being an activist and leading visionary projects. This role will work closely with Sam who is neurodivergent and the postholder will support her to transform her ideas and creativity into tangible work projects.

About the role and you

This is a truly unique position. It is going to bring a new capacity to the great projects we run. You’ll be integrated into our talented and warm community of colleagues. What we need from the postholder are the creative skills to fully communicate Sam’s ideas and the work to a wide range of people and partners, and the organisational skills to support pacing and planning of projects, creating systems and processes to advance and document progress and learning. They will act as a kind of bridge, relaying Sam’s vision and ideas once they have been conceptualised to various project managers, partners, and other audiences. It’s important to say also that there are elements of some traditional PA support that are required.

If this is how your creativity operates – enabling bridges to be built and creating effective communications – then you might be the person Sam, and the projects, need.

The successful candidate may come from any of a wide array of relevant backgrounds, such as: creative writing, communications, public affairs, campaigning, advocacy, policy influencing, media work, etc. Their career to date could be any number of settings: from film or theatre to think-tanks, to NGOs or international development, to private companies, to research or academia etc. The bottom line is that we are open to where you have honed your communications and organisational skills, and we are excited to hear from you.

How to apply

Please download the candidate information pack. The pack contains lots of information about the role and how to apply (by uploading your CV and a short video, together with a completed equal opportunities monitoring form). The closing date is 20 January 2025.

If you require any further information or you would like to discuss anything in more detail, please contact Allyson Davies via ad@allysondavies-consultant.com, or call 07968 556 164.

We distribute around £6m a year through our grants addressing critical areas of law, such as human rights, employment, housing, discrimination, children’s rights, community care, education, immigration, asylum and public and administrative law. We fund work to advance racial, gender, and disability justice, and work with communities including tenants, workers, migrants, refugees, and children. As well as funding, we also support organisations with training, consultancy and networking opportunities while using insights from our work and the work of our grant partners to influence broader policies and systems.

Over the past 12 years, we have achieved a great deal, and the journey ahead is even more exciting. As we develop our next strategy, we are deepening our focus on strengthening those who are best placed to drive social justice, building trusting relationships with grant partners and, especially during these challenging times, showing solidarity.

For new trustees, this is a pivotal moment to help shape our future working alongside a committed board, dynamic staff team, and a wide network of grant partners, peer funders and others committed to social justice.
